Skorpios
Skorpios (Greek: Σκορπιός) is a private island in the Ionian Sea off the western coast of Greece and just to the east of the island of Lefkada. The 2001 census reported a population of two inhabitants. Administratively it is part of the municipality of Meganisi in Lefkada Prefecture.
Geography
The island is heavily forested from south to north and features an abundant number of colorful trees.
History
It is mainly known as the private island of the late Greek shipping billionaire Aristotle Onassis. It was the site of his wedding to former US First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy on October 20, 1968. Upon his death it passed to his daughter Christina, and then in turn to her daughter Athina Roussel. Onassis, his son Alexander, and his daughter Christina are all buried on the island.
Little is known about Athina's relationship to her island, and she is believed to have spent very little time there. There have been rumors published that she may sell it, and stories in financial publications have placed its value at over US$200 million. On 9 August 2009, a British newspaper claimed – without any confirmation – that the island had been put up for sale by Onassis at the reported price of 100 million Euro.[1] Bill Gates has reportedly shown interest in the purchase of the island.[2] Reports on Greek Television and republished worldwide that the island has been sold to Giorgio Armani for 150 million Euro in September 2010 were denied, according to ANSAmed agency.

Meganisi
Meganisi (Greek: Μεγανήσι, literally "big island") is a Greek island and municipality immediately to the east-southeast of the island of Lefkada. The municipality includes the offshore islands of Skorpios (pop. 2 persons) and Sparti. Its total population was 1,092 at the 2001 census.
The island has three villages: the central village of Katomeri (pop. 492) and the ports of Vathy (145) and Spartochori (453 inhabitants). There is also a harbour at Atheni Bay used mainly by fishing boats. Meganisi is connected with Lefkada by a car ferry service from Vathy and Spartochori. Meganisi has a school, a lyceum (middle school), banks, churches and a few squares (plateies). The island has no secondary school, so pupils attend the nearby school in Nydri, on Lefkada.

The Lighthouse
![]() |
Lefkada Lighthouse: The Lighthouse of Lefkas is ideally located in Cape Ducato, which is down south of the island of Lefkadas. This lighthouse was built in 1913. It has an altitude of 4.5 meters. The lighthouse is a popular Scuba Diving center of Lefkadas, which affords a depth of 40 meters and visibility of 30 meters.
It is one of the most preferred Scuba Diving site in Lefakadas and it is here that you will come across plenty of lobsters. A word of advise for the the divers, if you are new to diving, then obviously this is not the place for you. The currents are pretty strong and only divers with past experience should venture and that too with an expert guide.
Kalamos
The main settlement on the island is the port town of Kálamos (pop. 483), on the east coast of the island. From here a regular ferry service connects the island to Mytikas on the mainland. Episkopi (pop. 60) is the only other inhabited village on the island. The village of Kefali, also known by its Venetian name Porto Leone was abandoned following the 1953 earthquake, which destroyed the water supply, but its church is still in use.
In the early 1990s, the water system was rebuilt and now every household has running water. As well, in recent years, all the foot paths that were once dirt have been upgraded to stone or pavement. Kalamos, once a remote island without electricity or a proper water system, now has all the conveniences of the mainland. Its nearest lyceum (middle school) and gymnasium (secondary school) is in the Aitoloakarnania prefecture but most of its students also attend in Nydri.
